The Promenade des Anglais empties of cyclists and fills with the last light, Cours Saleya swaps its flower market for candlelit tables, and the best seat in the city is a catamaran off Villefranche with a glass of rose as the hills go pink.
Eat your way through Vieux Nice.
Socca off the copper griddle on Cours Saleya, pan-bagnat at a market stall, pissaladiere warm from the oven and a glass of Bellet from the hills behind the city. Book a morning with someone who knows which counter to queue at.
Best seen from the sea.
Cap Ferrat’s villas hide behind pines you can only see from the water, the Mala caves glow turquoise at midday, and Villefranche’s deep bay was built for a swim stop. Half-day cruise or a sunset catamaran, pick your boat.
Old Nice keeps its own time.
The Baroque churches and ochre alleys of Vieux Nice have barely changed in three centuries. Climb the steps of the Colline du Chateau for the whole Baie des Anges in one blue sweep, then lose an hour in the Cours Saleya market. Best walked with someone who knows the courtyards.
Pick your corner of the coast.
Nice works as a base. Vieux Nice for the markets and the castle view. Villefranche for the deep-blue bay. Eze for the clifftop. Monaco an easy half-day east. Each one is a day, and each day is already mapped.
